Monday evening I was supposed to have a dressage lesson, but when I got to Hassler Dressage I discovered that Sassy had lost a shoe - ugh! I called my farrier and he wouldn't be able to put the shoe back on till Thursday. This is a big set back, as I really can't afford to miss any riding days as it will affect Sassy 's fitness. Tuesday I also had the day off to go cross country schooling, so I was disappointed to miss that too. Well, the disappointment was to get worse.....Tuesday was a sad day! When I got home from work I saw that a fence post in a gateway was cracked in half and the fence had fallen down. I could see Firenze and Quest, but not Sassy. My heart knew right away something was wrong and sure enough she was standing in the shed and wouldn't walk. I think she'd just stiffened up standing still, because I eventually got her walking slowly back to her stall. I was freaking out, we called the emergency vet and determined that she hadn't broken her leg, but she would have to go for X-rays in the morning. I had the gate between two paddocks open and I think she must have been running through the narrow opening of the gateway, got off balance, slipped and took out the fence post. She hit the post with her stifle, the stifle has a lot of little bones and ligaments, it's like our knee joint, not a good joint to hit. I cried practically all night, sad and worried about Sassy and really disappointed that I would not be able to make the 3 day event I had been working so hard for. :( Wednesday I took her to the vet hospital, driving slow all the way there. They took X-rays and luckily nothing was broken and there didn't appear to be any ligament injury. It was mostly muscle trauma and she had a big hematoma over the joint. She was walking a little better, very slow, but there was no way she could trot. She was put on anti-inflammatory meds and topical cream. It is truly amazing that she didn't break anything. I am so grateful for this - we will get to gallop another day.
